Objectives:
To evaluate the results of combined treatment with chemotherapy and
radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-two cases with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with combined cisplatinum and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy and radiotherapy between 1995-1999. These cases were retrospectively analyzed and their treatment outcomes have been documented. Results: Combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment have been completed in 20 cases. The mean survival was 46 months and the mean disease free survival was 24 months. In one case regional metastasis and in another case distant metastases have been documented. Twenty-one cases are still alive. Conclusion: Radiation therapy is the mainstay of treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Although there are controversial results about the role of chemotherapy in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy improved survival. In our series, eighteen cases (90%) were disease free. Large series are needed to assess the effects of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. |
