Abstract

Ranula is a mucosele, usually unilateral, located in the floor of the mouth. Cervical ranula or known also plunging ranula is a mucous extavasation pseudocyst arising from the sublingual gland and presents as a swelling in the neck. It is commonly seen in young adult, although reported age range is 2 to 61 years. The etiology of the ranula is unknown but has been described in association with congenital anomalies, trauma, and disease of sublingual gland. Computerized tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging can be useful in determining the origin and extend of the lesion, but sialography and ultrasound provide minimal information. Because a correct pre-operative diagnosis of cervical ranula is often difficult, patients usually undergo surgical excision of the cystic mass for both correct diagnosis and therapy. A wide variety of surgical procedures have been undertaken in the therapy of a cervical ranula. In the presence of a cervical mass wthout swelling of the oral floor, cervical approach must be the method of the choise. We present a ranula case whichseen relatively rare and excised via a cervical route in our clinics.
