Twenty-four-hour double-probe pH monitoring was applied to 22 patients with the complaint of hoarseness and videolaryngoscopic findings of pachydermia, edema and hyperemia of the posterior larynx, to detect the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux. Accompanying symptoms include heartburn and/or regurgitation (59.1%), troat clearing (54.5%), chronic cough (45.5%), feeling of lump in the throat (45.5%), abundant sputum in the throat (27.3%), and difficulty swallowing (22.7%). Videolaryngoscopic evaluation revealed pachydermia in 17 patients, arytenoid hyperemia in 7 patients and arytenoid edema in 3 patients. Fourteen had laryngopharyngeal reflux detected with 24-hour double-probe pH monitoring. All of these 14 patients had laryngopharyngeal reflux attacks while in upright position and only 4 patients had laryngopharyngeal reflux attacks while in supine position. We aimed to demonstrate the importance of laryngopharyngeal reflux in the etiology of hoarseness and the diagnostic value of 24-hour pH monitorization of the pharyngeal level, by comparing the findings of this study with the data in the literature. |
